Identification of Drought Tolerance Determinants by Genetic Analysis of Root Response to Drought Stress and Abscisic Acid

Abstract: Drought stress is a common adverse environmental condition that seriously affects crop productivity worldwide. Due to the complexity of drought as a stress signal, deciphering drought tolerance mechanisms has remained a major challenge to plant biologists. To develop new approaches to study plant drought tolerance, we searched for phenotypes conferred by drought stress and identified the inhibition of lateral root development by drought stress as an adaptive response to the stress. This drought response is par… Show more

“…It is a fact that plants always confront more than two kinds of individual environmental stresses or their combination simultaneously in field [68,72,73]. Although drawing plant gene regulatory network system with great details and complete pathways is impossible currently, the basic draft for this blueprint has been summarized in the recent publications [69,101,102,106,120,121,126,147]. This draft was established in combination with the recent advance in this hot topic and from the context of development, which will provide instructions for insights into understanding of higher plant refine adaptation to environmental stresses and sustainable developmental utilization of environmental resources.…”

“…Sharp et al (1994) also found a requirement of high ABA accumulation for maintenance of root elongation under low soil water potential. However, recent study showed that ABA has been found to inhibit the secondary root development as an adaptive response to the drought stress (Xiong et al 2006). Plants with elevated cytokinins showed an imbalance between shoot and root growth.…”

“…Drought is the most common environmental condition impeding crop growth and productivity [9]; furthermore, currently 70 per cent of the world's fresh water demand is for agricultural use [10]. Drought is a threat which is likely to become more pressing with the predicted future global increase in temperature [11].…”
