Identification of Differentially Expressed Genes and Pathways Involved in Growth and Development of Mesona chinensis Benth Under Red- and Blue-Light Conditions

Abstract: Mesona chinensis Benth (MCB) is an important Chinese herbal medicine. The plant factories might be one of the ways to solve the shortage of MCB supply. In this study, the MCB seedlings were treated under the red (R) and blue (B) lights in the plant factory. Results showed that the red light promoted the growth and development of MCB in comparison with the blue light. Under the red-light condition, the biomass, plant height, and root characteristics were significantly higher than those under blue-light conditio… Show more

“…Carbohydrate catabolism was also influenced by the light spectrum since the compounds of the TCA cycle were enriched among the 99 metabolites (DEMs) (42 upregulated and 57 downregulated) detected in different amounts in RL and BL in Mesona chinensis [ 144 ]. Some RL-responsive metabolites from the TCA cycle like succinate or oxaloacetate, participating in the stomatal opening, were also identified in Arabidopsis [ 145 ].…”

“…The influence of light spectrum on nucleotide metabolism was demonstrated in the case of thymidine kinase (TK), which transfers a phosphate group to a thymidine molecule to form TMP in the nucleotide salvage pathway [ 202 ]. Namely, BL downregulated the expression of the TK gene compared to RL [ 144 ]. In addition, nucleoside diphosphate kinases (NDPKs) showed specific phosphorylation after exposition to RL in pea ( Pisum sativum ) [ 208 ].…”

“…This result is consistent with findings in other plants, such as in tomato [ 27 , 28 , 29 ], soybean [ 30 ] and cucumber [ 31 ], where negative responses of plant radial growth to BL were reported. Moreover, in tomato [ 30 ], cucumber [ 31 ] and Mesona chinensis [ 32 ], positive responses of plant radial growth to RL were found. However, there are also reports indicating the positive role of BL on plant growth; for instance, BL enhanced the shoot length and bud numbers of in vitro-cultured Cinchona officinalis [ 19 ] and promoted hypocotyl elongation of arugula [ 33 ].…”

“…The RNA and cDNA used in qRT-PCR were the same as those used for RNA sequencing. GAPDH was employed as an internal control and the qPCR system and condition were according to the reference ( Tang et al, 2021 ). Three biological repeats were used for each.…”
