Abstract:Streptococcus pneumoniae is a commensal of the human nasopharynx and a major cause of respiratory and invasive disease. Pneumococcus stimulates upper respiratory tract inflammation that promotes shedding from mucosal surfaces and transmission to new hosts. Colonisation and transmission are partially antagonistic processes.
