Identification of Bioactive Compounds of Asparagus officinalis L.: Permutation Test Allows Differentiation among “Triguero” and Hybrid Green Varieties

Abstract: In this study, we determined the phytochemical profile of the Spanish “triguero” asparagus landrace “verde-morado” (Asparagus officinalis L.), a wild traditional landrace, and the improved “triguero” HT-801, together with two commercial green asparagus varieties. For comparison, we used reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometry (RP-HPLC-DAD-ESI-TOF/MS) followed by a permutation test applied using a resampling methodology valid un… Show more

“…The firs result of using this landrace in the development of new asparagus cultivars was an octo ploid clonal hybrid ('HT801') that derived from a cross between two octoploid plants (fe male and male) found in two different farmers' plots located in the area where this land race is cultivated [35]. Differences for several important morpho-agronomic traits in thi crop and higher bioactive compound profiles than in current cultivars have been de scribed for this octoploid cultivar [35,36]. This study focused on the development of a pre breeding diploid population carrying germplasm from the tetraploid 'Morado de Huétor The genetic diversity of this population was also assessed employing a set of EST-SSR markers.…”

“…Based on our previous study and the MS/MS data reported in the literature, 4,10–28 a total of 342 metabolites were tentatively identified, which were divided into 11 categories, including 53 saponins, 47 flavonoids, 133 lipids, 33 phenolic acids, 31 amino acids, peptides and derivatives, 10 carbohydrates, 7 nucleosides, 9 organic acids, 4 alkaloids, 3 lignans and norlignans and 12 other compounds. The base peak intensity (BPI) chromatograms of the inedible parts of white and green asparagus are shown in ESI Fig.…”
