Identification of bioactive components of essential oils in Heracleum sosnowskyi and Heracleum mantegazzianum (Apiaceae)

Abstract: The contents and composition of essential oils obtained from Heracleum sosnowskyi and Heracleum mantegazzianum (Apiaceae) were examined. essential oils were investigated by the GC/MS method. The composition of hogweeds’ essential oils was examined in order to determine toxic compounds that could have a direct influence on the health of people and animals living in close proximity to both species. It was found that the essential oils, except for derivatives of coumarins, contain numerous toxic compounds, … Show more

“…Other compounds detected in trace amounts were hexanol, propan-1-yl 2methylbutanoate, isopropyl isovaleriate, n-hexyl acetate, and ocymene. That is similar to the previously reported constituents of essential oils extracted from H. sosnowskyi fruits [8,9,18]. The identified compounds in H. sosnowskyi seeds are summarized in Table 2.…”

“…Changes of the landscape caused by the high plants are extremely negative [8]. Data indicate that the invasive species of the genus Heracleum can be a serious threat to people living next to them due to their toxicity [9]. In Lithuania, H. sosnowskyi usually grows in grasslands, outskirts, and various areas of anthropogenic origin of various types (such as waysides, wastelands, abandoned farmlands, quarries, and so on), and grows more rarely in forest and shrub communities (tree strata of various compositions and ages).…”

“…It is a very widely distributed plant, particularly in the eastern part of Europe and North America, and is treated as ubiquitous weed. Therefore it is an excellent plant material for chemical and biological evaluation, possessing the advantage of ready availability in large quantities (Jakubska-Busse et al, 2013), an important aspect of the philosophy of ecopharmacognosy (Cordell, 2014). H. mantegazzianum is known as a rich source of coumarins and essential oils (Jakubska-Busse et al, 2013;Skalicka-Woź niak & Głowniak, 2012), among others.…”
