Identification of agricultural soils suitable for afforestation in the Czech Republic using a soil database

Abstract: Afforestation of agricultural lands may be a positive action in many cases. Especially, it is a beneficial feature for waterlogged soils, stony soils or for soils which are less fertile for any other reason and thus unsuitable for farming. Afforestation can be a very important action even in the agricultural landscape -afforested belts of agricultural land divide large farm blocks into smaller ones, or act as windbreakers and biological corridors. The value, quality and fertility of soil can be assessed in dif… Show more

“…Good growth of this species was confirmed also on abandoned agricultural lands, but protection against browsing is necessary in this case (Tužinský et al 2015). These areas are relatively large throughout Europe, including the Czech Republic (Vopravil et al 2015) and therefore the introduced species can play important role in this process (Podrázský et al 2015(Podrázský et al , 2016. The evaluation of their effects on the soil ecosystem compartment can prevent many mistakes (Ehrenfeld 2003).…”

“…The partial studies indicate no site improvement effects in European conditions, even slight soil degrading effects comparing to native broad-leaved species (Kantor 1989;Podrázský & Štěpáník 2002;Jonczak et al 2015;Bonifacio et al 2015). On the contrary, Northern red oak can significantly contribute to the afforestation of agricultural lands (Vopravil et al 2015) due to its character of pioneer species.…”

“…In addition to the Czechia, this type of soil can also be found in Slovakia (Danubian Lowland), central Germany, Hungary, Eastern Romania, and Northern Bulgaria [14]. The area and production capacity of high-quality agricultural soils is decreasing, and the share of erosion-endangered soils is increasing [14,15].…”

“…After medieval deforestation, large areas were reforested again for production purposes. The most extensive afforestation effort took place after the Second World War (1939)(1940)(1941)(1942)(1943)(1944)(1945), when large areas were afforested in regions with former German settlement [1], and the area of forest lands continued to increase during the remainder of the 20th century, reaching its peak in 1991 after a huge transformation of the farm sector [2].…”
