Identification, Mapping and Pyramiding of Genes/Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) for Durable Resistance of Crops to Biotic Stresses

Abstract: Biotic stresses significantly limit global crop production. Identification and use of resistant cultivars is currently seen as the best strategy, cheapest, durable and environmentally friendly method to manage biotic stresses. However, resistance gained through single gene/quantitative trait loci (QTLs) transfer leads to resistance breakdown within a short period. Hence, current breeding programs targeted at developing durable and/ broad spectrum resistant cultivars by pyramiding multiple resistant genes/QTLs.… Show more

“…To respond to fast evolution of a pathogen, a breeder should have access to wide pool of R genes and tools for their fast introduction to breeding lines. Genetic engineering would extend possibilities of gene pyramiding as it allows transferring gene of interest from any source, regardless of crossing barriers, into a crop plant (Mekonnen et al 2017). Recent advances in development of homozygous potato inbred lines are also promising and provide another approach for generating late blight resistant diploid hybrids.…”

“…The most efficient strategy to manage harmful pests is enhancing the host plant's resistance to these pathogenic organisms [37]. Therefore, breeding toward durable resistance against a broad spectrum of these pests is the most practical approach for preventing crop loss [38] 9 and 11 for BL resistance were identified in a previous study [20]. The major QTLs on chromosomes 9 and 11 were located in the Pi2/9 [45] and Pik/Pikm [46] regions, respectively.…”

“…Reliable biotechnological method have also be developed for identification of GM crops for biosafety and legitimacy of transgenes (Fraiture et al, 2015;Lin and Pan 2016;Nazir et al, 2019). Mekonnen et al, (2017); ISAAA (2018); Nazir et al, (2019) On the contrary, concerns over the lack of knowledge on the safety of GM crops are used as arguments to ban them, or at least to regulate them heavily. Many citizens, politicians and countries generally take those arguments to reinforce misconceptions about GM crop.…”
