Mollusk samples were collected between March 2018 and January 2019 through seasonal sampling at five stations [Riva (ST1), Kuzdere (ST2), Kanlıdere (ST3), Atdosun (ST4), Değirmendere (ST5)] of Riva Stream (Istanbul). In the study, 7,073 individuals, 7 taxa [1 species belonging to Prosobranchia (Bithynia sp.), 3 species belonging to Pulmonata (Planorbis planorbis (Linnaeus, 1758), Physella acuta (Draparnaud, 1805) and Gyraulus albus (O. F. Müller, 1774) and 3 species belonging to Bivalvia [Pisidium casertanum (Poli 1791), Pisidium amnicum (Muller, 1774) and Sphaerium corneum (Linnaeus, 1758)] were determined. Considering the dominance (%) of taxa, Bithynia sp. was determined as the most dominant species among all stations (5,479 individuals (77.46%)). During sampling, various environmental variables [depth (cm), width (cm), flow rate (m/s), water temperature ( o C), dissolved oxygen (%), pH, conductivity (μS/cm), salinity (ppm), NH 4 -N (mg/L), NO 3 -N (mg/L), NO 2 -N (mg/L), PO 4 -P (mg/L), TP (mg/L) and TSS (g/L)] were measured. The relationship between environmental variables and taxa was determined using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) using the Past Statistics Program, version 4.02. The clustering relationship between the five sampling stations and the unweighted pair group method (UPGMA) with arithmetic mean was shown.

The Madeira Island (Portugal; 32°24’–33°07’N, 16°16–17°16’W; 796 km2) is an oceanic island located in the North Atlantic, about 980 km south of Portugal and about 700 km west of the African coast. The presence of freshwater invertebrates in oceanic islands has always raised questions concerning dispersal, colonisation and evolution. Therefore, the freshwater fauna of Madeira Island has attracted the interest of many researchers in the past, the first publications going back to the nineteenth century. Initial studies were mainly taxonomic, resulting in a checklist of the Madeira freshwater macroinvertebrates with 240 taxa. As typical from oceanic islands, freshwater invertebrates are characterised by low diversity, with some taxonomic groups absent. Although freshwater Madeiran macroinvertebrates are a well-studied group, geographical information of diversity distribution is still scarce. Therefore, more studies are needed, especially georeferenced data of diversity and distribution of macroinvertebrate assemblages, to provide valuable information for improving knowledge and the development of typologically appropriate monitoring and conservation programmes and restoration strategies for local stakeholders. The results of the present study revealed 713 occurrences in 40 sampling points in Madeira Island streams. The occurrence data showed 70 different aquatic taxa belonging to 21 orders and 53 families. Amongst our occurrence data, 15 endemic taxa (22.1%) from Madeira Archipelago were found. In addition, different families of Collembola and different taxa of Copepoda (Onychiuridae, Poduridae, Isotomidae, Entomobryidae, Sminthuridae) comprised new records for the Madeira streams. Therefore, further taxonomic and ecological studies on freshwater invertebrates from Madeira Island should be done with a particular focus on these lesser-known groups. Thus, our data increase the geographical data distribution of freshwater macroinvertebrates and their diversity in Madeira Island. This database is an update of geographical information of diversity distribution of Madeira freshwater macroinvertebrates known groups. This information is essential for a better understanding of community composition, diversity, occurrence or spatial distribution, which will help explore different research questions on different research areas, such as community ecology and biogeography.

The aims of the study are to determine what the organisms Barbus cyclolepis consume as food in its feeding environments and to compare prey consumption with prey abundance in the environment. The study was conducted in the Istranca Stream located in Istanbul (Turkey) during the spring and summer of 2012. A total of 142 B. cyclolepis specimens were captured and it is determined that 94 of them had full digestive tracts. Diet analyses of B. cyclolepis showed that its food spectrum consisted of 11 different food types, and the species was found to feed on insects, mainly Diptera (IRI%= 92.26%). The most abundant macroinvertebrate organisms in the environment were Diptera and Gastropoda. The electivity index of B. cyclolepis was positive for Diptera in the spring (E= 0.49), but the value was below the expected value of 0.6 for high selectivity. The electivity values for other macroinvertebrate groups, consumed in low proportions, were negative. In summer, the fish fed on Diptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera, but a high electivity index value was found only for Trichoptera (E= 0.87). Results showed that B. cyclolepis mainly consumed Diptera as food and did not consume Gastropoda, although it is the second most abundant macroinvertebrate group in the environment. A relationship was determined between the proportion of food groups consumed in the digestive tracts of fish and the ratios of macroinvertebrates in the environment, and as a result, it was specified that the fish was selective on Diptera.
