The pheromones of the weevils has been the most studied and used so far for Coleoptera species. The majority of reported weevil pheromones is produced by males and usually attract both sexes. The identified pheromone compounds are classified in two categories: ten-carbon compounds with terpenoid branching and compounds of various sizes, apparently of fatty-acid origin. These pheromone structural categories are consistent within subfamilies. This review aims to give an overview of the aggregation pheromones identified for Curculionidae pests, describing the relationship of the molecules structural pattern among subfamilies, and propose an identification key based on the structure of the pheromone components.Keywords: weevils; pheromone structure; identification key. INTRODUÇÃOOs curculionídeos são besouros da superfamília Curculionoidea, com cerca de 60.000 espécies descritas.1 Os adultos da família Curculionidae são facilmente reconhecidos pela presença de uma cabeça prolongada em um rostro de comprimento muito variável, assim como antenas genículo-clavadas 2 (Figura 1). Os curculionídeos, em sua grande maioria, são fitófagos, tanto na fase larval como na adulta. 3Muitas espécies são importantes pragas de diversas culturas, bem como de grãos armazenados, e a necessidade constante de medidas de controle mais efetivas e seguras ao meio ambiente tem exigido da comunidade científica a busca por novos métodos de controle para minimizar o impacto desses insetos. Como em outros grupos de insetos, esta necessidade tem aumentado a investigação do uso de feromônios como mais uma ferramenta no manejo dessas pragas. Um trabalho extensivo tem sido feito na identificação de feromônios e seu uso dentro da família Curculionidae, 4 exemplificado pelas décadas de pesquisa conduzidas com o bicudo do algodoeiro, Anthonomus grandis.5 Seguindo a identificação de quatro componentes do feromônio de agregação de A. grandis, 6 feromônios de várias espécies de curculionídeos têm sido identificados.A maioria dos feromônios relatada em curculionídeos é produzida pelos machos e usualmente atrai ambos os sexos, por isso são conhecidos como feromônios de agregação. Entretanto, alguns feromônios também têm sido verificados em fêmeas. Estes incluem feromônios sexuais de longa-distância, que atraem principalmente machos, curta-distância ou feromônio de contato, que permitem reconhecer coespecíficos e feromônio de oviposição, que algumas fêmeas usam para marcar os hospedeiros, nos quais elas colocam seus ovos. Finalmente, existem exemplos de curculionídeos utilizando feromônios de outras espécies de besouros, como cairomônios. 4 Em virtude de seus hábitos de vida, o estudo comportamental de curculionídeos é relativamente complexo. Uma alternativa que evita muitos problemas com bioensaios e acelera o processo de identificação é a cromatografia gasosa acoplada à eletroantenografia (CG-EAG)....

Abstract-Infochemicals play an important role in the biology of many insect species. An understanding of their role in plant-herbivore-carnivore interactions can be used in the development of tools for the enhancement of environmentally benign alternatives to synthetic pesticides. This review discusses how chemical information mediates ecological interactions between organisms and the role of infochemicals in integrated pest management. Infochemicals can be used in pest monitoring and in pest control, through mating disruption, mass trapping and to aggregate herbivores at delivery sites for biological control agents. Particular emphasis is placed on the potential of using pheromones and kairomones in the management of the banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a pest in plantations of East African highland banana and plantain in most banana-growing regions of the world. Cosmopolites sordidus produces an aggregation pheromone that attracts both males and females. This pheromone has been identified and synthesised and is being recommended as an effective agent in the trapping and control of the weevil. The synergism between banana plant extracts (kairomones) and the synthetic pheromone in attracting C. sordidus should be better exploited. Future research areas that can provide information for the development of an infochemical-based trapping system for the management of C. sordidus are discussed.Key Words: infochemicals, kairomones, aggregation pheromone, Coleoptera, banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus, biological control, pathogenic fungi, predators, synergism Résumé-Les sémiochimiques jouent un rôle important dans la biologie de beaucoup d'espèces d'insectes. La compréhension de leurs rôles dans les interactions plante-herbivore-carnivore peutêtre utilisée pour le développement d'outils destinés à améliorer les techniques de luttes alternatives aux pesticides de synthèse. Cet article montre comment l'information chimique agit sur les interactions écologiques entre organismes et, discute du rôle des infochimiques dans la gestion intégrée des ravageurs. Les sémiochimiques peuvent être utilisés pour surveiller et contrôler les ravageurs, à l'aide de la technique de la confusion sexuelle et du piégeage de masse et pour rassembler les ravageurs en un lieu donné pour les agents de lutte biologique. The banana (Musa spp.) weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a major pest in East Africa causing yield losses of up to 14 metric tonnes per hectare annually. Laboratory and field experiments were conducted to determine whether the response of the banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) to its aggregation pheromone was influenced by age, female mating status and weevil density. Laboratory bioassays were conducted using a double pitfall olfactometer, while a bucket pitfall trap was used in field experiments. There was no significant (P>0.05) difference in response to pheromone between immature and mature weevils (males and females) in laboratory bioassays. Forty-day-old weevils had a stronger response to the pheromone than 10-day-old ones under field conditions. The response of unmated weevils to the pheromone was stronger than that of mated weevils, both in the laboratory and field. The percentage of unmated and mated weevils recaptured from 0 and 3 m were similar but significantly different from 6 m way from the pheromone baited trap. The response of the weevils to the pheromone was not significantly (P>0.05) influenced by its previous density.
