Identification and mapping of resistance gene analogs (RGAs) in Prunus: a resistance map for Prunus

Abstract: The genetically anchored physical map of peach is a valuable tool for identifying loci controlling economically important traits in Prunus. Breeding for disease resistance is a key component of most breeding programs. The identification of loci for pathogen resistance in peach provides information about resistance loci, the organization of resistance genes throughout the genome, and permits comparison of resistance regions among other genomes in the Rosaceae. This information will facilitate the breeding of re… Show more

“…About QTLs associated with marker EPPISF032 in C×EL-4, like QTLs of C×EL-2, few resistance loci can be found in literature. Markers linked with ESTs related with resistance to powdery mildew (a biotrophic pathogen) were found in Lalli et al (2005) in a similar map position of LG4 (markers CC136A, AG8A, and CC138, positioned near BPPCT015 and thus to EPPISF032). A QTL was recently found in Martinez-Garcia et al (2013a) in LG4 of "PopDF" (see below); however, the QTL resulted significant only 1 year, and significance interval is in a position around 8,500,000 bp of scaffold 4, far from the position of QTLs SK-if_2009.4 and SK-if_2010.4b (near EPPISF032, around 12.77 Mb of the same scaffold).…”

“…Few disease resistance QTLs have been mapped in the region associated with SK-if QTLs of C×EL-2. In the "Prunus resistance map" (Lalli et al 2005), two resistance gene analogues (RGAs) have been anchored to LG2. One of these RGAs is situated in the lower region of T× E-2 group (marker AC19, 10 cM under UDP96-013), collocating with a QTL for powdery mildew resistance (Foulongne et al 2003).…”

“…Engagement of innovative molecular breeding approaches allows breeders to establish sustainable resistance more accurately and at a faster pace (Lalli et al 2005). PCR approaches implementing mainly degenerate primers were extensively applied in order to isolate members of the NBS family (nucleotide-binding site) / LRRs (LeucineRich Repeats) -containing genes, the most highly expanded group of genes linked directly to resistance (R) genes mediated functions in plants (Debener & Byrne 2014).…”

“…P. Karst), leaf spot (Cercospora moricola Cooke), leaf rust (Cerotelium fici (Castagne)) and red rust (Aecidium mori) (Srivastava and Mehra, 2004). The development of fungal resistance cultivars through genomics-assisted breeding is an important determinant towards the establishment of efficient disease breeding strategies (Lalli et al, 2005), especially in mulberry where it is time consuming to select for fungal resistance.…”
