Identification and looping tool path generation for removing residual areas left by pocket roughing

Abstract: For pocket with complex geometry shape, lots of residuals will be left after pocket roughing. These uncut regions always are around sharp corners, bottlenecks, and sidewalls with small areas and soft edges. Additionally, as most of the stock material has been removed, the thin wall between two adjacent pockets tends to deform when machining the residuals. Thus, certain technological requirements such as starting from the soft edge, retaining down-milling, and keeping constant feed rate are needed to machine th… Show more

“…As stated before, process optimization and online monitoring and control are key factors for improving efficiency and quality in machining [ 19 ]. With the development of intelligent machining, the optimization of cutting process configuration during actual production has become more accessible, and optimizing the volume of removed metal by adjusting the grinding time for each part can decrease the process time and improve tool life [ 20 , 21 ]. Finally, the grinding machine control system can receive the measurement results of the machined part as feedback information for process verification.…”
