“…As previously reported by Wang et al. (23), HLA‐C*0701 and C*0702 differed by two nucleotide substitutions at −7 and −20. All HLA‐A and C alleles examined showed a C‐C sequence at +9 and +10 after the stop codon in the 3′ UTR in comparison to the consensus sequence, whereas the corresponding sequences reported by Summers et al.…”

“…The HLA‐A and ‐C stop codon was used as a reference point for numbering all 3′‐UTR sequences. The majority of the 5′‐ and 3′‐ UTR sequences adjacent to exon 1 and 7 were identical to those reported previously (19, 23) however, there were some exceptions. We did not detect any substitutions at the start codon of HLA‐A*0301, but a G to C substitution was found at the −7 position of HLA‐A*1101.…”

“…These studies were performed with serology,1, 6 which is an unreliable technique for accurately determining HLA‐C alleles. The progressive development of molecular biology techniques has allowed more accurate detection of histocompatibility alleles 8, 9, 22–24. In malignant thyroid pathology, the only association between the HLA‐Cw7 allele and papillary and follicular carcinomas was found by Ozaki et al18 Our results indicate an association between the lower frequency of the HLA‐Cw7 allele and the presence of differentiated carcinoma.…”

“…Family segregation allowed to define the Cw*070403‐bearing haplotype as follows: A*680102–Cw*070403–B*1518–DRB1*1103–DRB3*020201–DQB1*03AF. Cw*0704 was identified in haplotypes including B*1518 in Oriental populations and associated to B*4402 in Caucasoid and Black people (2, 3). Therefore, the new Cw*070403 variant here described in a Caucasian individual would show probably a strong relation with the Cw*070401 allele found in the B*1518‐bearing oriental haplotype.…”
