Identification and detection of a void under highway cement concrete pavement slabs based on finite element analysis

Abstract: For a city, the construction of a road is related to the development of economy, and the construction of a road includes maintenance of the road. Cement roads have been popularized in road construction due to their low construction cost and high strength, but at the same time, road problems have arisen. In order to solve and prevent the problem of voids under highway cement concrete pavement slabs, the acoustic vibration method was used for the detection of voids under highway cement concrete pavement slabs. “…Good resistance to wear, frost, fire, and explosion is necessary for cement base material used for the pavement of roads, highways, airport runways and other projects [1][2][3][4][5][6], however, under high temperature, road cement base material is prone to temperature stress [7][8][9][10][11], for mortar, concrete, grout, and other building materials that take cement as the cementing material, their thermal expansion coefficients are different, as the temperature changes, the different deformations would result in temperature stress inside the structure of road cement base, and when the stress concentration reaches a certain value, the structure of road cement base will crack, which is detrimental to the construction quality of road structure [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. Moreover, under high temperature, the physical and chemical properties of road cement base will undergo changes, such as mass reduction, formation of holes and cracks, and the decline of stress and durability performance [20][21][22][23].…”

“…The geometric size of the void area is vital for the bearing capacity of slab. With the increasement of the void area, the void leads to the settlement and misalignment of the cement slab, and eventually causes the slab breaks [1] . Therefore, it is urgent to develop a non-destructive testing (NDT) method to determine the void area and give a maintenance guide before the slab broken.…”
