Identification and classification of known and putative antimicrobial compounds produced by a wide variety of Bacillales species

Abstract: BackgroundGram-positive bacteria of the Bacillales are important producers of antimicrobial compounds that might be utilized for medical, food or agricultural applications. Thanks to the wide availability of whole genome sequence data and the development of specific genome mining tools, novel antimicrobial compounds, either ribosomally- or non-ribosomally produced, of various Bacillales species can be predicted and classified. Here, we provide a classification scheme of known and putative antimicrobial compoun… Show more

“…Three of them revealed a hit with the MIBiG database and seven were already known from the sequence of the type strain. The ribosomal antimicrobial proteins and the NRPSs were reported in a previous publication (Zhao & Kuipers, ). The siderophore biosynthetic cluster 6 identified in our analysis showed similarity to petrobactin, an NRPS‐independent siderophore that depends on catecholate condensation (Lee et al., ).…”

“…In particular, in the realm of Bacillales hundreds of genomes have been completely sequenced. This immense array of data has enabled the development of genome mining strategies for the detection, structure analysis, and exploitation of yet‐unknown bioactive compounds . Particularly successful procedures that combine bioinformatic genome screening with modern mass spectrometry by utilizing the unsurpassed sensitivity and accuracy of such techniques for the detection of novel compounds and for structure elucidation have been revealed …”

“…Paenibacillus strains isolated from various habitats synthesize antibiotics of a peptide or macrolide nature: polymyxins A-E, paenibacillin, jolipeptin, gavaserin, saltavalin, fusaricidin A-D, gatavalin, paenimacrolidine, paenilamicin, and others (Wu et al 2011;Aleti et al 2015). A review by Zhao and Kuipers (2016)…”
