Abstract: What is the metaphysical import of Hegel's views about freedom? The paper discusses a possible answer to this question that emerges from Robert Brandom's reading of Hegel. For Brandom, Hegel's idealism, and in particular his view that reality has a modally robust conceptual structure, accounts for the possibility of our thought being rationally, rather than just causally, constrained by reality.
