ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile: Pneumoviridae

Abstract: The family Pneumoviridae comprises large enveloped negative-sense RNA viruses. This taxon was formerly a subfamily within the Paramyxoviridae, but was reclassified in 2016 as a family with two genera, Orthopneumovirus and Metapneumovirus. Pneumoviruses infect a range of mammalian species, while some members of the Metapneumovirus genus may also infect birds. Some viruses are specific and pathogenic for humans, such as human respiratory syncytial virus and human metapneumovirus. There are no known vectors for p… Show more

“…Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), recently renamed as Human orthopneumovirus belonging to the Pneumoviridae family Orthopneumovirus genus, is one of the most important viral pathogens which causes lower respiratory tract illness (LRTI) including bronchiolitis and pneumonia, especially in infants and young children . Respiratory syncytial virus is divided into two subgroups, A and B, based on antigenic and sequence variations.…”

“…RSV is an enveloped virus with negative-stranded RNA genome that belongs to the family of Pneumoviridae (Rima et al, 2017). The viral envelope is derived from the membrane of the infected host cells with an inner layer formed by the matrix protein M. The nucleocapsid contains the viral RNA, the nucleocapsid protein N, the viral polymerase large protein L, the phosphoprotein P, and the regulatory factors M2-1 and M2-2.…”
