ICEEc2, a New Integrative and Conjugative Element Belonging to the pKLC102/PAGI-2 Family, Identified inEscherichia coliStrain BEN374

Abstract: The diversity of the Escherichia coli species is in part due to the large number of mobile genetic elements that are exchanged between strains. We report here the identification of a new integrative and conjugative element (ICE) of the pKLC102/PAGI-2 family located downstream of the tRNA gene pheU in the E. coli strain BEN374. Indeed, this new region, which we called ICEEc2, can be transferred by conjugation from strain BEN374 to the E. coli strain C600. We were also able to transfer this region into a Salmone… Show more

“…The ability of the ICEs to excise and circularize was assessed as described above. The novel Salmonelladerived elements ICESe3, ICESe4, and CTnscr94 were found to be capable of excision, as were HAI2 from E. carotovora and ICEEc2 from E. coli (60), but no amplicons indicative of excision or circularization were obtained for the element within C. rodentium strain ICC168 or either of the elements from Y. enterocolitica, indicating that these latter three are unable to excise under the selected experimental conditions (Table 3).…”

“…Some ICEs such as ICE Ec2 from E. coli carry a Tn 7 ‐related transposon. The Tn 7 found in ICE Ec2 carries an integron encoding resistance to trimethoprim, streptothricin, and streptomycin (Roche et al ., ).…”

“…Several ICEs, including ICE Hin1056 (80), SXT-R391 (17, 73), and ICE Ec2 (126), carry insertion sequences and/or transposons. Other ICEs, including SXT ET (73), ICE Ec2 (126), and Tn 5253 (6, 77), contain integrons (reviewed in 142). In some cases, a plasmid has integrated, apparently by single crossover, into an ICE, for example in the case of Tn 5253 (6, 77).…”
