Ice composition evidence of marine ice transfer along the bottom of a small Antarctic Ice Shelf

Abstract: The existence of marine ice transfer along the underside of the Hell's Gate Ice Shelf ( Victoria Land), is indicated by an isotopic and chemical study of ice cores. Because of top surface ablation, the marine ice formed at the ice shelf‐ocean interface, ultimately appears at shelf surface. A succession of congelation, platelet and frazil ice is shown to occur. The combined study of stable isotope composition and of the sodium content of these different ice types proves to be a valuable tool for specifying the … Show more

“…The Na content of type I ice is in the range 0.003--0.033 ppt which is similar to that for the Amery Ice Shelf (0.005 ppt). However, these concentrations are comparable to those reported by Souchez and others (1991) for frazil ice formed from multiple freezing events in Hell's Gate Ice Shelf (0.005--0.15 ppt) and much lower than those for congelation ice (0.5--0.8 ppt) in the same study.…”

“…This ice has a <5 1B O range of + 0.26 to + 1.560/00 which is similar to that for sea ice (Souchez and others, 1991), indicating a marine origin. This is confirmed by the inclusion of some biogenic material, mainly marine benthic diatoms and sponge spicules.…”

“…Significant marine ice layers have been observed in the Filchner-Ronne, Amery, Hells Gate and Nansen Ice Shelves (e.g. Morgan, 1972;Souchez and others, 1991;Oerter and others, 1992;Eicken and others, 1994;Tison and others, 1998;Khazendar and others, 2001;Lambrecht and others, 2007). A comparatively smaller proportion of marine ice has been observed in the Ross Ice Shelf (Gow, 1963;Zotikov and others, 1980).…”
