Ice Age Terrestrial and Freshwater Gastropod Refugia in the Carpathian Basin, Central Europe

Abstract: Thanks to its unique microclimatic, geomorphological , hydrological conditions forming a mosaic-like environment present at all scales, numerous Late Tertiary and Pleistocene warmth-loving gastropod taxa managed to find refugee within the Carpathian Basin during the major-minor cold spells of the Ice Age. This complex system of refugia have been continuously functioning and evolving since the Late Tertiary through the entire Pleistocene and the Holocene. To understand the spatial and temporal evolution of refu… Show more

“…2). Similar changes were noted in the regional pollen, phytolith and anthracological records (Willis et al, 2000;Haesaerts, 2002, 2011;Willis and Van Andel, 2004;Ravazzi, 2002;Bhagwat and Willis, 2008;Sümegi et al, 2013aSümegi et al, ,b, 2015Sümegi et al, , 2018Sümegi et al, , 2019Feurdean et al, 2013Feurdean et al, , 2014Magyari et al, 2014aMagyari et al, ,b, 2019Vincze et al, 2019;Pató et al, 2020). As a result of cooling towards the end of the glacial, various species-rich forest-steppe ecotones (boreal open parkland, parkland, boreal forest steppe) emerged, which differed in the ratio of arboreal/nonarboreal elements.…”

“…Magnetic susceptibility values ranged between 20 and 75 × 10 -8 kg -1 m 3 (Fig. 3) with values for loess in general close to the normal baseline loess values of 22-25 × 10 -8 kg -1 m 3 characteristic of the Carpathian Basin (Bösken et al, 2018a,b;Marković et al, 2015;Sümegi et al, 2018;Újvári et al, 2014). Values between 37 and 45 are characteristic of the lowermost palaeosol and the assumed position of the middle archaeological layer (BAL) are similar in range to palaeosols of the LGM documented from other parts of the basin as well (Bösken et al, 2018a,b;Marković et al, 2015;Sümegi et al, 2018;Újvári et al, 2014).…”
