Ibn Khaldun on discipline

Abstract

Aim: This paper examines discipline in Ibn Khalduns substantive writings. It argues that it is the underlying theme in his entire analyses of social, cultural and economic phenomena. More specifically, it shows that discipline is at the centre of his well-known treatment of asabiyyah. Method: The following discussion surveys a number of these studies to show the extent to which they integrate discipline into the analyses and interpretations of asabiyyah. Findings: His substantive texts reveal that discipline for him involves the subordination of the individual interest to that of the group, patterns of behavior based on obedience to social orders, sacrifice and self-denial and the significance of self-restraint. The texts also show that Ibn Khaldun takes the incompatibility between discipline and luxury for granted. Implications/Novel Contribution: Abdurrahman Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406) is a well-known medieval scholar interested in many subjects, the most important of which is asabiyyah (social solidarity). This research provides in-depth knowledge regarding the work of Ibn Khalduns.
