Yersinia ruckeri —A threat not only to rainbow trout

Abstract: Yersinia ruckeri (Y. ruckeri) can cause mortalities that are contributing to substantial economic losses in the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) aquaculture sector. Because of its most characteristic clinical signs, the disease in rainbow trout caused by this pathogen is called enteric redmouth disease. Although it is considered to affect mainly salmonids, there are reports in the available literature of isolating this bacterium from other fish species, both clinically healthy and diseased. The aim of this … Show more

“…The infection is most acute and lethal in fish up to fingerling size, whereas older fish typically suffer from a chronic infection (Tobback et al, 2007). This disease is historically most prevalent in farmed rainbow trout but has a broad host range including at least 20 species of fish (Pajdak-Czaus et al, 2019). Outbreaks of ERM continue to occur around the world and are commonly linked to poor water quality and husbandry practices (Tinsley et al, 2011).…”

“…The name of the disease comes from a characteristic symptom in the form of petechiae around the mouth [6]. Rainbow trout are considered the most susceptible to the disease, however Y. ruckeri was also isolated from other fish species, both from clinically healthy fish as well as from infected individuals [7]. The development of an asymptomatic carrier state after disease outbreaks may affect up to 25% of clinically healthy trout.…”
