Virtual Scrum: A teaching aid to introduce undergraduate software engineering students to scrum

Abstract: Teaching agile practices is becoming a priority in Software engineering curricula as a result of the increasing use of agile methods (AMs) such as Scrum in the software industry. Limitations in time, scope, and facilities within academic contexts hinder students' hands‐on experience in the use of professional AMs. To enhance students' exposure to Scrum, we have developed Virtual Scrum, an educational virtual world that simulates a Scrum‐based team room through virtual elements such as blackboards, a Web browse… Show more

“…Both, supporting tools and adaptation of agile techniques, have been explored in capstone courses and projects. Rodriguez et al [29] propose a virtual Scrum tool that simulates a Scrum-based team room by means of the 3D virtual world metaphor. The tool can support specific configuration and progress of each student team [29].…”

“…The increased deployment of agile approaches (such as scrum methodology) in software development industry has led to the inclusion of agile software development practices in software Engineering curricula at undergraduate level. To boost computer science students' exposure to scrum, Rodriguez et al [13] proposed Virtual Scrum, which is also known as an ''educational virtual world'' and simulates a scrum-based team room using various virtual elements such as web browser, charts, calendars, blackboards and document viewers. To emphasize the significance of adopting scrum as an agile project management method, von Wangenheim et al [14] developed a paper and pencil game to educate students of undergraduate degree programmes about the benefits and merits of using scrum.…”

“…Em [Rodriguez et al 2015]é apresentado um ambiente virtual intitulado Virtual Scrum, que utiliza recursos tais como quadros, gráficos e calendários, para simular a sala de uma equipe Scrum. Além disso também permite que avatares 3D interajam uns com os outros.…”
