I, Thou, and We: A Dialogical Approach to Couples Therapy

Abstract: This paper examines the relational view of the person in Martin Buber's philosophy of dialogue. Shifts toward the relational are considered in the context of human development, gender studies, psychotherapy, and family therapy. A dialogical approach to couples therapy is presented, in which partners are encouraged to move toward a more collaborative, empathic relationship--a relationship of "I and Thou."

“…It was anticipated that morally responsive therapists would experience moments of awe or wonder when clients exceeded the therapist's conceptions and expectations. An I-Thou stance facilitates an openness to being surprised and appreciative of another (Fishbane, 1998). In our research, this occurred for both clients and therapists.…”

“…This study defines it as the degree of truthfulness with which a person is able to respond to another and the sense of responsibility that comes when experiencing the alterity of the Other. Moral responsiveness might be called a "way of being," with similarities to Buber's "I-Thou" position (Fishbane, 1998;Warner, 2001). A morally responsive therapist has the attitude described by the Levinasian term primacy of the Other, showing a concern for all that pertains to the Other.…”

“…The model's emphasis on inclusion in dialogue and its description of therapeutic change being associated with a shift from competitive to collaborative relationships is also found in Fishbane's (1998) Buber-informed (e.g., 1958Buber-informed (e.g., , 1965) dialogical approach to couple therapy.…”

“…Buber is reported to have stated the therapeutic relationship lacks the dynamic of mutuality necessary for a true I-Thou relationship (Baldwin 1987). Others, however, see in Buber's paradigm a construct that is descriptive of the level of engagement and personal presence which reflects the processes of acceptance and confirmation that characterize good therapy (Baldwin 1987;Fishbane 1998;Potts 1994;Rogers 1980). The view advanced in this paper is that Buber's 'I-Thou' concept can be usefully employed as a means of understanding the ethical and reciprocal nature of the client/therapist dialogue when issues of spirituality emerge in therapy.…”
