Abstract. The composition of the pulmonary fat emboli, plasma and bone marrow triglycerides were compared in the traumatized dog in the post‐alimentary state. The animals had been fed triglycerides with a fatty acid pattern different from both post‐absorptive plasma and bone marrow triglycerides. This fat intake caused the appearance of chylomicrons with a triglyceride fatty acid pattern similar to that of the ingested fat. These alterations in the plasma triglycerides were not reflected in the emboli and bone marrow triglyceride composition. The results therefore indicate that there was no significant contribution of the chylomicrons to the fat emboli.

Abstract. Quantitative and qualitative serum lipoprotein studies in the dog during fat embolisation did not reveal any major changes within the lipoprotein distribution, indicating that none of the lipoproteins participate as a source or transport vehicle for fat emboli material. An expected major participation by the HDL (high‐density lipoproteins) or α‐LP (α‐lipo‐proteins) in the transport of fat emboli material in the dog, cannot be confirmed by the present study.

The fat embolism syndrome is a symptom complex of acute respiratory failure after long-bone fractures. It is thought to be caused by deposition of embolic fat within the pulmonary capillaries, resulting in a capillary leak within the lung. The source of the embolic fat appears to be marrow fat. Alterations in circulating free fatty acids, increases in fibrin split products, and increases in platelet adhesiveness have been observed to occur in this syndrome and probably play an important part in the production of the pulmonary lesion. The signs and symptoms of the syndrome are hypoxemia, tachypnea, petechiae, fever, altered sensorium, and chest roentgenograms similar to signs of the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Early recognition is facilitated by monitoring of arterial blood gas levels for hypoxemia. Treatment is directed at ARDS using graduated oxygen therapy and steroids.
