“…The success of Lethaby's process of recuperation relied specifically on the implementation of a precise method of "scientific" comparative analysis that chimed with the professional practices of the Burlington, which had quickly established itself as the premiere exponent of innovative and rigorous art-historical scholarship. 42 To be included among the Burlington's list of contributors was to advertise one's membership of a scholarly elite that had the capacity to influence fundamentally the course of art historiography and art appreciation. 43 In line with contemporary connoisseurship, which specialized in dating and identifying the oeuvre of Renaissance artists and Old Masters particularly, Lethaby's approach in the "Primitives" series was to present his articles as a chronological survey of the work of known and named "masters" operating in England between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries.…”
