Streptomyces spp. as biocontrol agents against Fusarium species.

Abstract: Streptomycetes are the largest taxon of antibiotic producers in the microbial world. Nevertheless, they are less studied than other biocontrol agents against Fusarium diseases and, perhaps, plant diseases in general. Plant diseases incited by Fusarium species are notably challenging. Four species complexes in the genus are pathogenic: Fusarium fujikuroi, F. graminearum, F. solani and F. oxysporum. Being a vascular pathogen, F. oxysporum is particularly difficult to control by using microbial antagonists. Most … Show more

“…These results are relatively consistent with previous studies showing the effect of antagonistic microorganisms in reducing the incidence of different Fusarium diseases [5, 16-19, 30, 46-49]. They act against pathogens by synthesizing antimicrobial secondary metabolites [13,15,20,26,28,31], induce systemic resistant in plants [7,8,16,17,26,27], inhibit the growth of pathogens, and suppress disease incidence and severity [5, 8-11, 13, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21-24, 30, 32].…”

“…Streptomycetes, are antibiotic producers [15], were reported to significantly inhibit the growth of Fusarium spp. [16,17] and reduce disease incidence and disease severity of different Fusarium diseases [16,18,19].…”

“…Streptomycetes are widely distributed in the soil, where they are strong competitors and antagonists. The use of streptomycetes as BCAs is largely documented in the literature and, recently, their application against plant diseases incited by Fusarium species has been reviewed by Bubici (2018). In the literature, we found only four pot trials where streptomycetes were tested against FWB (Table 1).…”

“…Streptomyces spp. are often used as biocontrol agents because they can produce a wide array of secondary metabolites ( Bubici, 2018 ; Chen et al, 2016 ; Yuan and Crawford, 1995 ). Streptomyces spp.…”
