Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriage in the community: a survey from central Italy

Abstract: Recently, concern has increased regarding the spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the community. We studied 812 subjects from central Italy to establish the rates of nasal carriage of S. aureus, and antibiotic susceptibility patterns, in the community. The prevalence of S. aureus nasal carriage was 30.5%. Only one subject, with predisposing risk factors for acquisition, was identified as carrier of MRSA (prevalence of 0.12%). The presence of MRSA in the community of our area still a… Show more

“…We found similar resistance rates to those obtained in another study made in Tuscany (Italy) (Zanelli et al, 2002) from human nasal carriages only for a few antibiotics: the percentage of S. aureus resistant to gentamicin was 9.52% against a value of 13.2% coming from clinical samples, and no vancomycin-, teicoplanin-o methicillin-resistance was found. For the other tested antibiotics no similarity was found.…”

“…9%. These levels of carriage are similar to those reported in community studies elsewhere [12][13][14][15]. The chosen sample site of the anterior nares has been demonstrated to have the highest sensitivity to detect carriage in the absence of infected wounds [20].…”

“…5%) [12]. This frequency was similar to that obtained from studies performed in the United States, Portugal and Italy, all of which reported carriage rates of less than 1 % [13][14][15]. Although the importance of the community as a source of MRSA infections has not been determined, this change in pattern of occurrence may require modifications in hospital infection control programmes.…”

“…There were 44 additional isolates of S. aureus from 513 throat swabs (8.6%) taken over VOL. 44,2006 MRSA IN REMOTE ABORIGINAL COMMUNITIES 3721 a 2-month period; these were presumably related to nasal carriage. Antibiotic resistance patterns.…”
