Solanum linnaeanum Leaves: Chemical Profiling of VOCs and Effects on Seed Germination and Early Growth of Monocots and Dicots

Abstract: Some Solanaceae plants are a rich source of sesquiterpenoid phytoalexins with allelopathic potential. Powder and aqueous extract obtained from the leaves of Solanum linnaeanum Hepper & P.M.L. Jaeger were used to treat the seeds of three target species (Lolium multiflorum Lam., Sinapis alba L. and Trifolium incarnatum L.). Both matrices were evaluated along with untreated controls to determine their toxicity on germination and seedling growth. The results revealed that the pre‐emergence treatments were able to … Show more

“…Sowing in Petri dishes (90 mm) was carried out under a biological hood with vertical laminar flow. The seeds of each target species (10) were placed on two sheets of sterilized filter paper sprinkled with 0.25 g of coarsely chopped A. moschata and subsequently soaked with 5 ml of distilled water. Two runs with three replicates each were performed: E. oryzoides (N = 10x3x2) and L. multiflorum (N = 10x3x2).…”

“…Similarly, food consumption in Schistocera gregaria Forsskål, 1775 fifth instar larva was reduced as a result of the eating lettuce soaked in various extracts of S. linnaeanum fruit peel (Zouiten et al 2006). Garzoli et al (2022) detected allelopathic potential in leaf extract of S. linnaeanum to inhibit seed germination of some noxious plants. Furthermore, there are reports that S. linnaeanum is a compatible rootstock for grafting eggplant as it was obtained from seeds, which is short-term to overcome infestation of pathogens and unfavorable conditions in soil (Villeneuve et al 2016).…”
