Short Communication:HIV Type 1 Variants with Nevirapine Resistance Mutations Are Rarely Detected in Antiretroviral Drug-Naive African Women with Subtypes A, C, and D

Abstract: K103N is frequently detected in HIV-infected women after single dose (SD) nevirapine (NVP). K103N-containing variants were detected more frequently by the ViroSeq HIV-1 Genotyping System in women with subtype C (69.2%) than subtypes A (19.4%, p < 0.0001) or D (36.1%, p < 0.0001). K103N-containing variants were also detected more frequently and at higher levels in women with subtype C by the LigAmp assay. In this report, we analyzed samples collected prior to or within hours after SD NVP administration from ant… Show more

“…Amino acid substitutions associated with PI resistance were reported as natural non-B HIV-1 variants in treatment-naive patients [17,18]. The prevalence of substitutions obtained was similar to those previously described [19]. In a previous study conducted in Abidjan, the authors have detected key drug resistance mutation in recently HIV-1 infected adults [9].…”

“…[37][38][39] Although early reports in the US placed the prevalence of ARV resistance in ARV-naïve patients at 20-23%, 8-10 more recent estimates have been lower, including those in HIVinfected pregnant women. 16 Minor mutations were similarly distributed among ARVexperienced and unexperienced pregnant women.…”

“…Women in the PEPI-Malawi trial were likely to have been infected with HIV-1 subtype C [13], [14]. In a previous study of pregnant HIV-infected women enrolled at the same study site, all of the infections analyzed were HIV-1 subtype C [22].…”
