Shewanella putrefaciensbacteraemia associated with terminal ileitis

Abstract: Shewanella putrefaciens has a wide geographical distribution, including sea- and fresh water, fish and soil, but it is an unusual pathogen in humans. A previously healthy boy without known immunodeficiency presented with fever, abdominal pain and diarrhoea, and a mass in the right lower quadrant. Terminal ileitis was confirmed by MRI and Shewanella putrefaciens was isolated from two separate blood cultures. This is the first report of terminal ileitis associated with Shewanella putrefaciens septicaemia.

“…Furthermore, Shewanella often causes skin and soft tissue infections, ear, nose, and throat-related diseases, chest and abdominal cavity infections, blood infections, and even cardiovascular and central nervous system diseases ( Yu et al, 2022 ), causing widespread concern both domestically and internationally. Such bacteria have been isolated from clinical samples of patients with diarrhea in recent years ( Yiallouros et al, 2013 ; Dey et al, 2015 ; Fang et al, 2017 ). Yonglu et al (2009) isolated them for the first time from patients with food poisoning.…”
