In Situ TiC Ceramic Particles Locally Reinforced Al‐Si Matrix Composites Prepared by SHS‐Casting Method from the Al‐Si‐Ti‐C System

Abstract: Using Al-Si-Ti-C powder mixtures, TiC grains locally reinforced Al-Si matrix composites were produced through selfpropagating high-temperature synthesis and casting method. The formation of TiC could be ascribed to the dissolution-reaction-precipitation mechanism. The TiC grains were uniformly distributed in the locally reinforced regions of the Al-Si matrix. With increasing Al-Si content, the size of TiC grains decreased. No pores and cracks were present at the interface between the Al-Si matrix and the reinf… Show more

“…These pores and cracks play an important role in dynamic compressive properties. Under high-speed impact loading, the release of the stress is caused due to the nucleation of micro cracks and increases fracture toughness [38], whereas, since the impact resistance of alloys is less sensitive to pores and microcracks than tensile properties [39], some pores that are close to each other may even collapse, merge, and close, thereby improving the fracture strain of the alloys under impact loading conditions.…”

“…This method has several main modifications, i.e. conventional aluminothermy in air; under elevated inert gas pressure; centrifugal casting [47][48][49][50][51][52][53]. The main stages for SHS casting are presented in Figure 6.…”

“…As these ceramic particles are mainly derived from the combustion synthesis reaction, understanding the kinetic characteristics is vital to achieving a desired microstructure. Conventionally, the influence of the kinetic parameters on the combustion behaviors and synthesized products was predicted by thermodynamic calculations and/or reaction mechanism 31–34 . These methods are helpful but not entirely accurate.…”

“…Conventionally, the influence of the kinetic parameters on the combustion behaviors and synthesized products was predicted by thermodynamic calculations and/or reaction mechanism. [31][32][33][34] These methods are helpful but not entirely accurate. As we know, combustion synthesis can be ascribed to the exothermic reaction of the reactants.…”
