Houttuynia cordata modulates oral innate immune mediators: potential role of herbal plant on oral health

Abstract: Our data indicated that H. cordata can modulate oral innate immune mediators. These findings may lead to the development of new topical agents from H. cordata for the prevention and treatment of immune-mediated oral diseases.

“…A water extract of HC has also been shown to exert strong anti-inflammatory effects against S. aureus lipoteichoic acid-induced inflammatory responses that are partly attributed to the inhibition of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) expression in dermal fibroblasts [ 30 ]. Finally, a powdered extract of HC was recently found to modulate innate oral immune mediators in oral epithelial cells [ 33 ], and the mRNA abundance of IL-8 and CCL20 (used as inflammatory mediators) was upregulated in a dose-dependent manner. However, our results demonstrated that dHC inhibited IL-8, CCL20, IP-10, and GRO α production by P. gingivalis LPS-stimulated human oral keratinocytes.…”

“…Previous studies have demonstrated that extracts from medicinal plants exhibit various pharmacological activities including antimicrobial effects [ 23 – 26 ], antiadherence effects against oral microorganisms [ 27 29 ], and anti-inflammatory effects [ 30 33 ]. Houttuynia cordata Thunb.…”

“…The production of many cytokines by epithelial cells also increased in response to various microorganisms and other cytokines (Hedges et al , ; Krisanaprakornkit et al , ; Steele and Fidel, ). Of interest, recent studies demonstrated that the expression of these innate immune mediators can be up‐regulated by herbal plant‐derived compounds such as ellagic acid (EA) (Promsong et al , ) and Houttuynia cordata Thunb ( H. cordata ) extracts (Satthakarn et al , ).…”

“…Besides EA, other herbal plant‐derived compounds such as H. cordata water extract have been shown to up‐regulate the expression of hBD2 and SLPI without cytotoxic effect (Satthakarn et al , ). H. cordata is a plant in Saururaceae family usually consumed as a fresh side dish vegetable and has been used as a traditional medicine in Asian countries (Lu et al , ; Fu et al , ).…”
