Schistosoma haematobiumInfection and Morbidity Before and After Large‐Scale Administration of Praziquantel in Burkina Faso

Abstract: This study suggests that even a single round of mass chemotherapy can have a substantial impact on S. haematobium infection and its associated morbidity in children.

“…47,48 This gap in the association with chronic parasitic infection is probably caused by the prolonged lag (time elapsed) between initial infection and its effect on linear growth and the detection of growth failure (HAZ −2), which takes months to years to become manifest. 37 Causality is, therefore, difficult to establish because of a multiplicity of potential confounders, particularly those confounders associated with poor diet, poverty, and low SES.…”

“…16 Currently, the WHO strategy for schistosomiasis control relies on mass-drug administration (MDA) of praziquantel, 17 which is effective in reducing disease-associated morbidity. [18][19][20][21][22] The impact of MDA is measured by a change in infection prevalence and intensity. Guidelines exist for schistosomiasis MDA thresholds, frequency, and target populations (school-based versus community-wide), but there are few objective data supporting them.…”

“…In highly endemic populations, micronutrients are being distributed as part of parasite control programmes to reduce the burden of anaemia. 2,[25][26][27][28][29][30][31] We have used data collected and georeferenced by the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), together with highresolution continental maps of selected environmental variables, Abstracts in ‫,عريب‬ 中文, Français, Pусский and Español at the end of each article.…”
