Salvia officinalis Extract Can Protect Grapevine Against Plasmopara viticola

Abstract: The ability of sage (Salvia officinalis) extract to control grapevine downy mildew under greenhouse and field conditions was tested. The persistence and rainfastness of sage extract were also investigated. Sage extract provided a high level of sustained disease control in artificially inoculated, potted grapevine under greenhouse conditions. However, even small amounts of simulated rainfall (10 mm) significantly reduced efficacy of sage extract. In a field experiment in 2006, sage extract provided 94% reductio… Show more

“…When applied as a stand‐alone strategy in a screening vineyard in CH‐Frick, efficacies of up to 68% were reached. In previous studies, only two extracts (from M. alternifolia and S. officinalis) reached similar efficacies in the same screening vineyard, while most other tested plant extracts (from I. viscosa, A. sibirica, Q. saponaria and Camellia oleifera) were less efficient . Yet, the efficacy of larch extracts alone was lower than the efficacy of the references (copper and Strategy).…”

“…Several studies on grapevine have confirmed that EOs could be an efficient alternative treatment against P. viticola . Dagostin et al (2011) used Salvia officinalis EO at concentration of 50 mL/L on potted Pinot gris vines in greenhouses, and on Carbernet Sauvignon in field trials (29). The efficiency was here also much lower in the field due to previously mentioned reasons.…”
