Saccharomyces boulardiistimulates sIgA production and the phagocytic system of gnotobiotic mice

Abstract: The effect of Saccharomyces boulardii on the immune system was evaluated, comparing germ‐free Swiss/NIH mice monoassociated with the probiotic with germ‐free mice. Saccharomyces boulardii colonized the gut of germ‐free mice and survived the gastrointestinal conditions. An increase in sIgA production, both total and anti‐S. boulardii, was observed in the intestinal contents of monoassociated mice when compared with germ‐free controls. The number of Küpffer cells was significantly higher in monoassociated mice t… Show more

“…However, since the results for C3H/HeJ mice are from pools of cells, no statistical analysis was performed. Macrophages from germ-free mice have been shown to be less reactive (and to produce less inflammatory cytokines) than macrophages from conventional mice in several different models (13,(37)(38)(39), a result consistent with the fact that macrophages from germ-free mice produced lower levels of IL-12 p40 when compared to monoassociated mice. However, macrophages from germ-free mice produced similar levels of TNF-α when stimulated with bacterial preparations.…”

“…During the intestinal transit, S. boulardii interacts with resident microflora and intestinal mucosa. Moreover, experimental studies suggest that S. boulardii is protective against enteric pathogens, modulating the host immune response, decreasing inflammation and hydro electrolytic secretions, inhibiting bacterial toxin and enhancing trophic factors such as brush border membrane enzymes and nutrient transporters (7,8,10,14,37,53,40,44,47) .…”

“…A administração de probiótico elaborado com a levedura favoreceu a resposta imune celular tipos 1 e 2 estimulando a produção de IFN-γ e IL-4 em camundongos gnotobióticos (RODRIGUES et al, 2000). COPPOLA et al (2003) comprovaram que S. boulardii aumentou a resposta imune humoral de camundongos a uma bacterina de E. coli.…”
