I.S.Mu.L.T - Rotator Cuff Tears Guidelines

Abstract: Despite the high level achieved in the field of shoulder surgery, a global consensus on rotator cuff tears management is lacking. This work is divided into two main sessions: in the first, we set questions about hot topics involved in the rotator cuff tears, from the etiopathogenesis to the surgical treatment. In the second, we answered these questions by mentioning Evidence Based Medicine. The aim of the present work is to provide easily accessible guidelines: they could be considered as recommendations for a… Show more

“…Supraspinatus tendon (ST) tear is a widespread disorder characterized by functional deficits in the shoulder such as weakness, decreased range of motion, and debilitating pain . Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy provides a unique opportunity for redirecting the healing process away from scar formation and toward the regeneration of a fibrocartilaginous tendon‐bone insertion (enthesis) .…”

“…PRP, glucocorticoids, local anaesthetics, or hyaluronic acid are used to reduce pain and improve performance in patients who undergo rotator cuff repair. Among them, local anaesthetics and glucocorticoids have cytotoxic effects on tenocytes, and hyaluronic acid decreases pain in patients with partial tear of the rotator cuff tendons [8]. Recently, many authors have reported the effects of PRP on partial or complete tears of rotator cuff tendons [911].…”

“…A PROM commonly used to evaluate upper extremity function is the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire (DASH) [11] . The DASH can detect and differentiate small and large changes in disability over time after surgery in patients with a variety of upper-extremity musculoskeletal disorders [1214] .…”
