Rubus Fruit Juices Affect Lipid Peroxidation in a Drosophila melanogaster Model in Vivo

Abstract: The antioxidant capacity of red cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) juice correlates well with its phenolic content. The red berries have a markedly higher content of anthocyanins, particularly cyanidin and pelargonidin derivatives, than that found in the more common yellow fruit. Conversely, the yellow juice has higher ellagitannin content. A feeding study was conducted to show the in vivo effects of the juices on lipid peroxidation in a sensitive Drosophila melanogaster stock. In young female flies there were sig… Show more

“…However, studies suggest that the majority of the antioxidant capacity of small fruits is due to phenolic compounds. Previous reports show that up to 80% of the total phenolic content of yellow cloudberries (R. chamaemorus) is derived from ellagitannins (Mylnikov et al, 2005). A similar condition could possibly exist in the yellow raspberries.…”

“…[2][3][4][5] The anthocyanins present in blackberries and raspberries are important for the beneficial health effects associated with their antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and chemo-preventative properties. [6] Extracts of fruits from various blackberry, raspberry, and gooseberry cultivars act effectively as free radical inhibitors.…”

“…The direct effect of plant-derived vitamins on human health has already been comprehensively covered elsewhere [5][6][7][8][9] but it is the other components, specifically the polyphenolics, that are currently under intense focus with respect to their bioefficacy [10][11][12][13][14][15][16].…”
