“…In the presence of monensin, Galfll + 3GalNAc-Ser/Thr structures can clearly still be synthesized and can even be sialylated to some extent [40]. On the other hand, monensin completely blocks the GlcNAc: /31 + 4-galactosyltransferase 1401 which is a known marker for the truns Golgi [47] and an enzyme involved in the synthesis of complex-type N-glycans. However, it is not known at present whether the inhibition of /I1 + 4-galactosyltransferase activity by monensin is due to an effect on the enzyme itself or due to the inhibition of Golgi transport.…”

“…The relative pool size of the 166000-M, polypeptide in the Mg2'-precipitated membrane fraction (Table 1) indicates that newly synthesized aminopeptidase N spends about one quarter to one third of its time prior to microvillar expression (15-20 min) in the mature state. This form is generated in the Golgi complex, probably in the trans cisternae of the organelle [20], and is therefore present in some Golgi-derived membranes as well as in transport vesicles en route to the plasma membrane. Involvement of the basolateral plasma membrane in the final transport of aminopeptidase N to the microvillar membrane would imply that a certain fraction of the 166000-Mr polypeptide in addition resides in membranes of basolateral origin.…”
