Rhabdias glaurungi sp. nov. (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae), parasite of Scinax gr. ruber (Laurenti, 1768) (Anura: Hylidae), from the Brazilian Amazon

Abstract: The genus Rhabdias Stiles & Hassal, 1905 includes about 83 species of nematodes parasitic in amphibians and reptiles worldwide. Herein, we describe Rhabdias glaurungi sp. nov. from the hylid frog Scinax gr. ruber (Laurenti, 1768) in the Gunma Ecological Park, Santa Bárbara municipality, state of Pará, Brazil. This species has six small lips, an inflated cuticle along the entire body and a cup-shaped buccal capsule with smooth internal surface of its anterior part and irregularly folded internal surface of … Show more

“…Based on the oral structure arrangement, the new species resembles those from the group are characterized by having six lips (four submedian and two lateral lips): Rhabdias androgyna Kloss, 1971, Rhabdias breviensis, Rhabdias fuelleborni Travassos, 1926, Rhabdias galactonoti Kuzmin, Melo, Filho & Santos, 2016, R. glaurungi , Rhabdias manantlanensis Martínez-Salazar, 2008, and Rhabdias stenocephala Kuzmin, Melo, Filho & Santos, 2016 (Martínez-Salazar, 2008; Nascimento et al ., 2013; Kuzmin et al , 2015; Kuzmin et al , 2016; Willkens et al , 2019). We will also compare R. pocoto n. sp.…”

“…sp., the new host, record in the Caatinga biome and molecular data, we herein propose a new species, and will compare the new taxon with only those species reported in the Neotropical region which are morphologically similar to R. pocoto n. sp. However, as proposed by Willkens et al (2019), we will not use the species Rhabdias mucronata Schuurmans-Stekhoven, 1952, and Rhabdias truncata Schuurmans-Stekhoven, 1952 for comparison, as the author described those species based only on juvenile forms (Schuurmans-Stekhoven, 1952).…”

“…In South America, Oligacanthorhynchus sp. was recorded infecting Odontophrynus americanus (Duméril & Bibron, 1841) in Paraguay (Campião et al, 2014) Currently, the genus Rhabdias is composed of 84 species (Kuzmin & Tkach, 2018), being 18 reported in Neotropical anurans (Kuzmin et al, 2016;Willkens et al, 2020). Müller et al (2018) assessing the molecular diversity of Rhabdias in Brazil, reports the occurrence of cryptic species and three Amazonian strains infecting anurans in the northeast region: Rhabdias breviensis Nascimento et al 2013 in R. granulosa from Piauí state, Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala Kuzmin, Tkach & Brooks, 2007 in Rhinella jimi from Piauí and Ceará states, and R. cf.…”
