“…The time constants of the lung and tissue stores were related to alveolar ventilation but not those representing the blood stores. This implied that the exponential functions were not exactly representative of the stores because the rate of removal of carbon dioxide from blood should be related to the alveolar ventilation [Suskind and Rahn, 1954]. However, other attempts to recognize the sources of carbon dioxide expired using electrical analogues [Farhi and Rahn, 1960;Cherniack et al, 1966] have met equal difficulties and it is considered that the method reported offers a useful way of indicating the relative contributions of the different body stores to the output of carbon dioxide during hyperventilation.…”
