Polygonum viviparum L. inhibits the lipopolysaccharide‐induced inflammatory response in RAW264.7 macrophages through haem oxygenase‐1 induction and activation of the Nrf2 pathway

Abstract: These results suggest that PV possesses anti-inflammatory actions in macrophages and works through a novel mechanism involving Nrf2 actions and HO-1. Thus PV could be considered for application as a potential therapeutic approach for inflammation-associated disorders.

“…It has, in fact, been shown that the expression of HO-1 is crucial in inhibiting LPS-induced proinflammmatory responses in RAW 264.7 cells and that ROS mediates the induction of HO-1 in a redox-regulated pathway [23], [25].…”

“…Nuclear factor erythroid 2 (NF‐E2)‐related factor 2 (Nrf2), a key transcription factor for antioxidant mechanism, which is tightly regulated by Kelch‐like ECH‐associated protein 1 (Keap1)/Cullin3 (Cul3), affects GSH synthesis and redox state through inducing and upregulating antioxidant responsive element (ARE)‐dependent gene expressions, such as glutamate cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC), glutamate cysteine ligase modulatory subunit (GCLM), GS, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), heme oxygenase 1 (HO‐1), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione S ‐transferase (GST), etc . In view of these facts, the Nrf2‐ARE pathway is regarded as playing a critical role in stimulating GSH synthesis and inducing endogenous antioxidant response to depress ROS‐derived oxidative stress.…”

“…The genetic diversity of 48 representational populations of P. capitatum including 240 individuals was investigated by ISSR marker (Zhou et al, 2010). SRAP (sequence-related amplified polymorphism) was used to detect the polymorphisms of Radix Polygoni Multiflori in Chongqing (Cheng et al, 2013). SRAP might be superior to RAPD in genetic diversity studies.…”
