Pepper mottle virus Causing Disease in Chile Peppers in Southern New Mexico

Abstract: The primary pepper producing areas of southern New Mexico were surveyed to identify the viruses causing severe disease in chile peppers over a 2-year period. The survey included weeds commonly found in and around pepper fields. Using indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Pepper mottle virus (PepMoV) was associated with plants showing mosaic and distortion of foliage and fruit deformation. PepMoV and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) were determined based on ELISA to be infecting chile peppers and weeds… Show more

“…To our knowledge this is the first report of natural infection of Sambucus ebulus, Cichorium intybus, Conyza canadensis, Helliotropium europaeum, Lactuca serriola, Picris echioides and Scabiosa tennuiis by PVY (Schmelzer, 1967;De Bokx and Huttinga, 1981;Katis, 1984;Edwardson and Christie, 1997;Espino de Paz et al, 1997;Sˇkoric´et al, 2000;Fletcher, 2001;Kazinczi et al, 2002), of Fumaria officinalis by CMV Francki et al, 1979;Ford et al, 1988;Lorbeer, 1989, 1991;Crescenzi et al, 1993;Lavin´a et al, 1996;Fletcher, 2001;Rodriguez-Alvarado et al, 2002), and of Scabiosa tenuiis and Urtica dioica by AMV (Jaspars and Bos, 1980;Fletcher, 2001;Kazinczi et al, 2002). Some others such as Cirsium arvense, Cyperus rotundus, Mentha pulegium, Xanthium spinosum and X. strumarium for PVY, Amaranthus blitoides, Chondrila juncea, Malva neglecta and Mentha pulegium for CMV, as well as Cyperus rotundus and Picris echioides for AMV, were found infected for the first time by ELISA, but the virus detected was not readily recoverable in bioassays.…”

“…To our knowledge this is the first identification of PepMoV in Cuba. PepMoV has been reported affecting pepper growing areas of several states of the United States (Zitter, 1972; Rodriguez‐Alvarado et al , 2002) and Central America (Nelson & Wheeler, 1978). In 2003, it was found in C. annuum in Japan (Ogawa et al , 2003) and more recently in bell pepper in Taiwan (Cheng et al , 2011).…”
