Echimyidae is the most widely diversified family among hystricognath rodents, both in the number of species and variety of lifestyles. In the Patagonian Subregion of southern South America, extinct echimyids related to living arboreal species (Echimyini) are recorded up to the middle Miocene, whereas all the known southern fossils since the late Miocene are linked to terrestrial and fossorial lineages currently inhabiting the Chacoan open biome in eastern South America. In this work, we describe a new genus of echimyid rodent, Paralonchothrix gen. nov., from the late Miocene of northwestern Argentina and western Brazil. Its single recognised species, Paralonchothrix ponderosus comb. nov., is represented by two hemimandibles. One of them comes from a level of Loma de Las Tapias Formation, underlying a tuff dated at 7.0 ± 0.9 Ma (Huayquerian age, late Miocene); the other specimen comes from the ‘Araucanense’ of Valle de Santa María (type locality, Huayquerian age, late Miocene). A phylogenetic analysis linked Paralonchothrix to Lonchothrix, both being the sister group to Mesomys. Thereby, for the first time, an echimyid linked to living Amazonian arboreal clades is recognised for the late Miocene of southern South America. Paralonchothrix gen. nov. thus represents an exceptional record that raises the need to review the postulated evolutionary pattern for echimyids recorded at high latitudes since the late Miocene. The new genus provides a minimum age (ca.7 Ma) in the fossil record for the divergence between Mesomys and Lonchothrix. The palaeoenvironmental conditions inferred for the late Miocene in western and northwestern Argentina suggest savanna-type environments, with areas with more closed woodlands in peri-Andean valleys. The record of Paralonchothrix gen. nov. supports the hypothesis that this area would have maintained connections with tropical biomes of northern South America during the late Miocene.

Holocene mammals from Entre Ríos Province, Argentina. We present an unpublished collection of mammals from La Picada Formation (Holocene sensu lato) and San Guillermo Formation (upper Holocene) in the Entre Ríos Province, Argentina, deposited in the collection of the Museo de Ciencias Naturales y Antropológicas “Prof. Antonio Serrano’’ of Paraná City, Entre Ríos. Nine taxa were identified: Dusicyon avus (Carnivora: Canidae), Myocastor coypus (Rodentia: Echimyidae), cf. Hydrochoerus sp. (Rodentia: Caviidae), Dicotyles cf. D. tajacu (Cetartiodactyla: Tayassuidae), cf. Ozotoceros bezoarticus, Mazama sp. (Cetartiodactyla: Cervidae), Bos primigenius taurus (Cetartiodactyla: Bovidae), Equus ferus caballus (Perissodactyla: Equidae) and Cetartiodactyla indet. Ducysion avus and Dicotyles cf. D. tajacu are the first record of these taxa in Entre Ríos. The recognized rodents and cervids are commonly found in archaeological sites and in Quaternary units in Entre Ríos Province. Bos primigenius taurus and Equus ferus caballus are the first findings of post-Hispanic domestic taxa in Holocene sediments from Entre Ríos. The specimen from San Guillermo Formation is the first record of a vertebrate in this unit. Future multidisciplinary studies will be necessary in order to obtain more robust data that will allow us to elucidate the geological and faunistic recent past of the Entre Ríos Province. “…For the Upper Pleistocene of the austral Chaco region, several lithostratigraphic units from both principal fluvial basins are recognized, the Dulce and Northern Salado Rivers (Battaglia, 1982;Iriondo, 2010;Vezzosi et al, 2019). Some of these sequences are fossiliferous with aquatic and continental vertebrates (Frenguelli, 1920;1932;Castellanos, 1924;Vezzosi, 2016;Vallone et al, 2017;Gaudioso et al, 2017;Vezzosi et al, 2017;Albino & Gaudioso, 2018;Brandoni & Vezzosi, 2019;Gaudioso et al, 2019). A new material of a Quaternary waterfowl is described here. The implications of this finding, in the context of the dispersal of Anatidae in the past, are discussed. The specimen consists in a partial humerus coming from the Upper Pleistocene of austral Chaco from Santiago del Estero Province, Argentina. The specimen here described belongs to the tribe Cygnini, being larger than most members of the clade. The humerus shows different size than with other members of the tribe Cygnini, being larger than the humeri referred to the Andean goose (Oressochen melanopterus), the Sheldgeese of the genus Chloephaga, the Comb Duck (Sarkidiornis sylvicola), and larger than the Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea). However, the humerus have several anatomical characters indicating that it belongs to a basal anserine duck. These combinations of features allow us to assign this fossil to a species of waterfowl: Coscoroba coscoroba. This finding, it context with the history of the South American Cygnini, provides new environmental interpretations associated with wetlands, which will be tested in the austral Chaco and Northern Pampa through future multi-proxy studies.
