Agroforestry systems are environment-friendly production systems which help to preserve biodiversity while providing people with a way of earning a living. Cacao is a historically important crop in Venezuela that traditionally has been produced in agroforestry systems. However, few studies have evaluated how different trees used in those systems affect the dynamics and abundance of insects. The present study evaluated the entomofauna assemblages associated with different combinations of four timber-yielding trees and four Criollo cacao cultivars established in a lowland tropical ecosystem in Venezuela. A randomized block design with two replicates was used, each block having 16 plots which included all 16 possible combinations of four native timber trees (Cordia thaisiana, Cedrela odorata, Swietenia macrophylla, and Tabebuia rosea) and four Criollo cacao cultivars (Porcelana, Guasare, Lobatera and Criollo Merideño). Insects were collected with yellow pan traps and sorted to order. Coleoptera and parasitoid Hymenoptera were determined to the family level. In total, 49,538 individuals of seven orders were collected, with Hymenoptera, Diptera, and Hemiptera being the most abundant, although only Lepidoptera and Coleoptera abundances were significantly influenced by the timber tree species. Twenty-three families of parasitoid Hymenoptera and 26 of Coleoptera were found. Significant differences in insects’ assemblages were found both in parasitoid Hymenoptera and Coleoptera families associated to every shade tree, with the families Eulophidae and Lycidae being indicators for Cordia, and Chalcididae for Swietenia. The entomofauna relationship with the cacao cultivar was barely significant, although Scydmaenidae and Scarabaeidae were indicators for Lobatera and Merideño, respectively. No significant effects were found for interaction with cacao cultivars and native trees. We concluded that the particular insect assemblages found in Cedrela odorata and Cordia thaisiana, together with their high growing rates, make these two species an optimal choice for cacao agroforestry systems.

SUMMARYIn the present review article, a recapitulation of recent research made with the purpose of decreasing the negative effect produced by the insects Hypsipyla grandella and Hypsipyla robusta (shoot borers) on seedlings of the Meliaceae family is presented, highlighting the mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) and the cedar (Cedrela odorata) that are considered of high commercial importance due to the structure and quality of their wood in the forestry industry. Hypsipyla spp. has been identified as a potential plague and of commercial interest, as it attacks plants in their first life stages. This attack induces excessive branching, deformation of the stem and in the worst cases the death of the affected seedlings in monospecific plantations. The use of chemical agents (insecticides and pheromones), shade regulation on plantations, implementation of good forestry practices, biological control and the combination of plants with allelopathic principles against the plague in forestry cultures are some of the alternatives evaluated in situ and ex situ for the control or extermination of this plague that for many years has been the object of study of researchers.Key words: Cedrela odorata, commercial importance, monospecific plantations, pests, Swietenia macrophylla. RESUMENEn el presente artículo de revisión se hace una recapitulación de investigaciones recientes que se han realizado con el propósito de disminuir el efecto negativo producido por los insectos Hypsipyla grandella e Hypsipyla robusta (taladrador de los brotes tiernos) en plántulas pertenecientes a la familia de las meliáceas, destacando la caoba (Swietenia macrophylla) y el cedro (Cedrela odorata), consideradas de suma importancia comercial por su estructura y calidad de la madera en la industria forestal, se ha identificado a Hypsipyla spp. como una plaga potencial y de interés comercial por atacar a las plantas en los primeros estadios de vida, puesto que el ataque induce a la formación excesiva de ramas, malformación de fustes y, en el peor de los casos, la muerte de las plántulas afectadas en plantaciones monoespecíficas, desde el uso de agentes químicos (insecticida y feromonas), manejo de la sombra en plantaciones, implementación de buenas prácticas silviculturales, control biológico y la combinación de plantas con principios alelopáticos hacia la plaga en cultivos forestales, son algunas de las alternativas evaluadas in situ y ex situ a fin de controlar o erradicar la plaga que por muchos años ha sido objeto de estudio por investigadores.Palabras clave: Cedrela odorata, importancia comercial, plagas, plantaciones monoespecíficas, Swietenia macrophylla. The mahogany shoot borer Hypsipyla grandella Zeller is an important economic pest in all American tropical forests, because it prevents monoculture of valuable timber trees species like mahogany and cedar. The shoot borer damages several tree structures, especially the apical shoots, impairing the formation of the commercial stem. This pest can attack the plants during the year and one larva per plant is enough to cause significant damage. In infested areas, the attack can reach up to 100 % of the trees. The Australian cedar and African mahogany have been cultivated in Brazil for timber production, because they are considered resistant to H. grandella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) attack. However, in this work we report for the first time the H. grandella attack to African mahogany Khaya ivorensis.
