To study the structures and reactivities of alkali metallated intermediates of calix[4]arenes, three compounds were isolated: [Li(4)(p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-4H)(thf)(4)](2).6 THF (1), [Li(2)(p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-2H)(H(2)O)(mu-H(2)O)(thf)].3 THF (2), and [K(4)(p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-4H)(thf)(5)](2).THF (3). The structure of 1 is shown to be dependent on the coordinating solvent. Partial hydrolysis of 1 leads to the formation of 2. The potassium compound 3 features a different structure to that of 1, due to a higher coordination number as well as stronger cation-pi-bonding interactions.

The synthesis and precise supramolecular organization of new amphicalixarene 4 bearing four rodlike aligned fluorescent terephthalic benzamide moieties in the upper rim is reported. The aggregation of 4 was monitored by a combination of fluorescence, conductometry, and cryo-TEM measurements at different pH values and revealed significant structural differences. Most interestingly, we found that exactly 12 molecules of 4 assemble to form a spherical and structurally persistent micelle at pH 7, which coexists with rodlike micelles. In contrast to other examples of structurally defined micelles reported previously, this new type of self-labeled amphiphile serves as a fluorescence reporter with the terephthalic units additionally providing an extended cavity structure in the hydrophilic part, which facilitates the inclusion of guest molecules. In addition to the observed formation of well-defined micelles, the other highly important finding from this study is the fact that guest molecules directly influence the micellar organization because they can interact with both the free amphiphiles below the critical micelle concentration (cmc) or the micellar aggregate itself. These two types of interactions are especially pronounced in the case of the cationic pyrene derivative 10, which binds electrostatically with the amphiphile 4. In addition, a very unique membrane structure exhibiting a regular hexagonal pattern of 5 nm pores is formed by 4 at pH 4.

With the raw materials of calix [4]arene, benzocaine, tricaine and procaine hydrochloride, three new azo calix[4]arene derivatives 6a, 6b and 6c are synthesized by diazotization-coupling reaction of an aromatic amine, with its yield of 83%, 81% and 83% respectively. The structural characterization is in a way of IR, 1 H NMR and elemental analysis. This paper investigates the spectral properties of azo calix [4]arene derivatives under different solution pH conditions through the UV-visible spectroscopy, and researches the dyeing properties through the dyeing curve, color yield test and fastness test. The results show that, with the increase of pH value, the azo calix[4]arene derivatives 6a, 6b and 6c form azo-hydrazone tautomeric isomers with the maximum absorption peak redshift; the dyeing effect of the compound is good, of which the dye-uptake rate of the compound 6a is as high as 78%; the surface depth of color yield is 2.798, and the dry and wet rubbing fastness and the soaping fastness are respectively 4, which is a better disperse dye.
