Newmania: A new ginger genus from central Vietnam

Abstract: A new genus of Zingiberaceae from Vietnam, Newmania N.S. Lý & Škorničk., with two species Newmania serpens N.S. Lý & Škorničk. and N. orthostachys N.S. Lý & Škorničk., is described and illustrated. Its relationship with Haniffia Holttum and phylogenetic position in the tribe Zingibereae is investigated using nrITS and trnK and matK plastid sequence data. The phylogenetic position of Kedhalia C.K. Lim, another recently described ginger genus from the same tribe, is also discussed briefly.

“…The chloroplast trnK/matK region was amplified in short sections using primers from Leong‐Škorničková & al. (: table 2) in 50 μl volumes and mix as follows: 24.25 μl of dH 2 O; 5 μl of 10× PCR buffer; 5 μl of 25 mM MgCl 2 ; 4 μl of 10 mM dNTP; 0.5 μl of 0.1 mg/ml bovine serum albumin (BSA); 5 μl of 5 mM tetramethylammonium chloride (TMACl); 0.5 μl each of 10 mM forward and reverse primers; 0.25 μl Kapa Taq; and 5 μl of DNA. The PCR thermal profile for the trnK/matK region was set under initial denaturation at 95°C for 5 min, followed by 40 cycles of denaturation at 95°C for 30 s, primer annealing from 50°C–60°C for 40 s, and DNA strand extension at 72°C for 1 min with a final extension of 7 min at 72°C.…”

“…To extrapolate consistency, homoplasy and retention indices, intrafamiliar relationships were established based on the following studies: Cannaceae (Prince, 2010), Costaceae (Specht, 2006), Marantaceae (Prince and Kress, 2006), Musaceae (Liu et al , 2010), Strelitziaceae (Cron et al , 2012), Zingiberaceae (Wood et al , 2000; Kress et al , 2002, 2007; Leong-Škorničková et al, 2011). …”

“…Here, new taxa are continuously being discovered and named, both at the generic and specific levels. Several of the recent discoveries were further supported by the phylogenetic analyses which give a better understanding of the evolutionary relationships within the family (Kress and Larsen 2001; Kress et al 2010; Leong-Škorničková et al 2011). During the revision of the genus Scaphochlamys throughout its entire geographical range by the first author, some distinctive morphological traits were observed in several Bornean species, suggesting they might represent a separate group from the Peninsular Malaysian taxa.…”
