NandZdependence of nuclear charge radii

Abstract: This paper is devoted to the analysis of the general trends in the nucleon number dependence of the experimental root-mean-square (rms) charge radii. It is based on the data obtained by different methods of combined treatment of (i) radii changes determined from optical and—to a lesser extent—Kαx-ray isotope shifts, and (ii) absolute radii measured from muonic and electronic scattering experiments. These methods have recently been developed and now updated including experimental data up to the beginning of 200… Show more

“…Nuclear radii trends in the neutron f 7/2 shell. The present investigation of nuclear radii changes along the scandium isotopic chain complements the published results [4,5,7] on nuclear radii behaviour in the f 7/2 shell. This is illustrated in figures 5 and 6 where the absolute rms nuclear radii values, R = r 2 1/2 , are presented in terms of N and Z, respectively.…”

“…If a similar attempt is made for the ground state, a value of Q 0 ( 45g Sc) =-0.47(2) b may be deduced from the spectroscopic quadrupole moment, corresponding to a deformation of β 2 ( 45g Sc)= −0.154 (7). From these values and equation (11), assuming β 2 2 = β 2 2 , the estimated change in ms charge radii, δ r 2 45g,m = +0.43(20) fm 2 , is significantly higher than the experimental value of δ r 2 45g,m = +0.186(27) fm 2 .…”

“…This gives rise to the characteristic slope changes (kinks) at magic neutron numbers, which are observed at all neutron shell closures with N 28 [60]. For the neon radii a distinct minimum is observed for 18 Ne at the classical shell closure N = 8.…”

“…The slight increased cases also include the neutron-deficient nuclei at Z ∼ 55 and N ∼ 40. These groups are normally quoted as typical "shape phase transition" or "shape coexistence" zones [30][31][32]. Sudden changes in the shape and single-particle distributions with the number of protons and neutrons result in a large residuals other than zero.…”
