N-Acylethanolamine Metabolism Interacts with Abscisic Acid Signaling inArabidopsis thalianaSeedlings

Abstract: N-Acylethanolamines (NAEs) are bioactive acylamides that are present in a wide range of organisms. In plants, NAEs are generally elevated in desiccated seeds, suggesting that they may play a role in seed physiology. NAE and abscisic acid (ABA) levels were depleted during seed germination, and both metabolites inhibited the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings within a similar developmental window. Combined application of low levels of ABA and NAE produced a more dramatic reduction in germination and growth… Show more

“…Effects of PDP-EA and Cardanol-EA on Plant Growth-Negative effects on seedling growth by exogenous NAE 12:0 are well documented (13)(14)(15). PDP-EA and cardanol-EA were able to reverse partially these negative growth effects (Fig.…”

“…Plant Material and Cultures-Ten mg of A. thaliana (ecotype Col-0) seeds were surface-sterilized and then stratified in the dark for 2 days at 4°C prior to sowing in liquid (75 ml) or solid Murashige and Skoog medium (14). Growth of seedlings was in a 16-h light/8-h dark cycle (60 mol⅐m Ϫ2 ⅐s Ϫ1 ) for 11 days at 20°C.…”

“…Anandamide, the main ligand of the cannabinoid receptor in mammals regulates many cellular and developmental responses including the modulation of neurotransmission in the central nervous system, synchronization of embryo development, and vasodilation (for review, see Pertwee, 2006). It appears that NAE signaling has important biological functions in plants, such as germination (Wang et al, 2006;Teaster et al, 2007), defense responses (Chapman et al, 1998), and root development (Blancaflor et al, 2003), but research is still at a relatively early stage.…”
