Mycobacterium abscessus: an emerging rapid‐growing potential pathogen

Abstract: Mycobacterium abscessus is the most pathogenic and chemotherapy-resistant rapid-growing mycobacterium. It is commonly associated with contaminated traumatic skin wounds and with post-surgical soft tissue infections. It is also one of the mycobacteria that are most often isolated from cystic fibrosis patients. It is essential to differentiate this species from the formerly indistinct "M. chelonae-complex", as chemotherapy is especially difficult in M. abscessussenso strictu. Clarithromycin or azithromycin are t… Show more

“…In other clinical situations, lung infection is progressive and refractory to antibiotic therapy, necessitating lung resection for cure (Griffith et al, 1993;Daley & Griffith, 2002;Sherwood et al, 2005). This latter clinical scenario has resulted in the view that M. abscessus is the most virulent of the rapidly growing mycobacteria that cause invasive lung infection (Petrini, 2006). One of our laboratories has focused their studies on three well-characterized isogenic M. abscessus variants; 390R (rough colony morphology), 390S (smooth colony morphology) and 390V (rough colony morphology).…”

“…Mycobacterium abscessus is a rapidly growing mycobacterium that is ubiquitously present in the soil and in both natural and potable water (1). Although most individuals are able to resist infection with M. abscessus, this organism can cause skin, soft tissue, and chronic lung infections that are often difficult to treat (1,2).…”

“…Although most individuals are able to resist infection with M. abscessus, this organism can cause skin, soft tissue, and chronic lung infections that are often difficult to treat (1,2). Patients with cystic fibrosis may be chronically infected with M. abscessus, and the presence of this bacterium has been associated with a decline in lung function (3).…”

“…It is considered to be the most virulent rapidly growing mycobacterium and is responsible for most pulmonary infections due to rapidly growing mycobacteria (1). M. abscessus has also been identified as an important pulmonary pathogen in patients with cystic fibrosis (2).…”
