Moringa oleifera leaf flavonoids protect bovine mammary epithelial cells from hydrogen peroxide‐induced oxidative stress in vitro

Abstract: Bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMECs) of high‐producing dairy cows are subject to constant oxidative stress as a result of high metabolic rate and physiological adaptation to intensive farming. Moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaf has been proposed to have the antioxidant potential in scavenging free radicals due to the presence of flavonoids. In this study, we investigated the cytoprotective effects of moringa leaf flavonoids in alleviating oxidative stress in BMECs in vitro. Oxidative stress was established by … Show more

“…Given that MOLE exerts its protective antioxidant effect against H 2 O 2 -induced oxidative stress only in pretreated cells, we speculate that the activation of the Nrf2 pathway is particularly important in enabling cells to respond when subjected to oxidative stress promptly. In fact, our data on muscle cells are in agreement with recent reports on the effects of the different components of Brassicaceae , and Moringa oleifera in particular, on other cellular models exposed to oxidative stress [ 75 , 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 , 80 , 81 ].…”

“…However, pretreatments with the three assayed concentrations of Moringa oleifera significantly reduced hydrogen peroxide-induced ROS overproduction. Similar results were observed for moringa leaf flavonoids in bovine mammary epithelial cells against hydrogen peroxide and the compound 1-O-(4-hydroxymethylphenyl)-α-L-rhamnopyranoside from Moringa oleifera seeds against carbon against CCl 4 [ 43 , 44 ].…”

“…Moringa oleifera phytochemicals can protect liver mitochondria from oxidative injury [ 24 ]. Moreover, M. oleifera leaf flavonoids protect bovine mammary epithelial cells from hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress in vitro [ 25 ]. In addition, M. oleifera leaves extract induces vasorelaxation via endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization and calcium channel blockade in mesenteric arterial beds isolated from L-NAME hypertensive rats [ 26 ].…”
